Newberry County Genealogy
Newberry County, South Carolina was founded in 1785, although the area had been settled as early as the 1750s. Newberry County was created from the Ninety-Six district. Before the civil war, cotton was a primary agricultural product. In 1789 the county seat of Newberry was founded near the center of the county. The railroad came to the area in 1851 and Newberry had already become a thriving center of trade. Newberry College was founded in 1856 as a Lutheran supported College. The origin of the name of the County is uncertain.
Some historic points of interest in Newberry County include: Tea Table Rock which is a location where the British camped druing the Revolutionary War, a Quaker Cemetery, the oldest house in the county is The Rock House.
