Spartanburg History Hub & Spartanburg Chautauqua – Thursday, March 24, 2011, 6:30 pm, Barrett Room, Spartanburg Headquarters Library – FREE

The Spartanburg History Hub will be joining Spartanburg Chautauqua at the Barrett Room of the Headquarters Library in downtown Spartanburg to hear President Abraham Lincoln (as brought to life by George Frein). This is a preview of the June Chautauqua event featuring numerous characters from history. We will not follow our usual meeting format, but this is an opportunity we couldn’t pass up!

The Spartanburg History Hub is a network of individuals and organizations committed to Spartanburg County history. It is managed by the Spartanburg County Historical Association and meets one Thursday each odd month except July.

Candlelight Supper at Walnut Grove Plantation to Explore Upstate’s Rich Scots-Irish Heritage

Roebuck, SC, March 2, 2011 — Who were the first European settlers to move into Spartanburg County? Historians have long told us they were Scots-Irish. J.B.O. Landrum, an early chronicler of the county’s history, wrote that several families, “doubtless Scots-Irish,” settled along the Tyger River. Writers creating another county history for the Depression-era Work Progress Administration likewise took note of “Scots-Irish Presbyterian settlers” on the Tyger. The Moore Family of Walnut Grove Plantation was one of these first settler families and was, indeed, Scots-Irish. But just who were the Scots-Irish? Or should it be Scotch-Irish? Were they Scottish or Irish? Were they from Scotland or Ireland?

The Regional History Museum, as part of the Spartanburg Art Museum’s Art & Antique Show, presents two informative sessions on the history and care of porcelain and furniture. Join us Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm to learn from Michael Higgins about 18th Century Porcelain. Come back on Saturday, February 26, at 3:15 pm when John Morton & Alan DeCredico present information for antique furniture. Both sessions are free and located in the Regional History Museum upstairs in the Carlos Moseley Building of the Chapman Cultural Center at 200 E. St. John Street.

Spartanburg Music Trail – Ribbon Cutting

MAYOR TO OPEN SPARTANBURG MUSIC TRAIL

SPARTANBURG—Mayor Junie White will cut the ribbon to open the Spartanburg Music Trail Friday, February 11 at noon at the corner of West Main Street and South Daniel Morgan Avenue, across the street from the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. The trail, with accompanying cell phone audio tour, honors those who have made a national or international impact in the world of music.

Family members of some of the honorees will attend, and the public is invited.

Registrations Temporarily Disabled

Sorry for the inconvenience, but I’ve switched off registrations at the moment. Over the last 8 hours we’ve been under an attack of sorts with several registrations per minute. I will reenable registrations at a later point (hopefully soon.)

South Carolina Cemetery Project Looking for Some Help

I received an email today about a site and project that I don’t think that I’ve seen before, it’s the SCCemetery GPS Mapping Project. They are trying to determine which of the cemeteries should be noted as being Black. There is a page setup listing those with burials of Americans of African Descent. They tell me that they have completed the State’s Golden Corner. Most all of Oconee, Pickens and Anderson are done although they do need help finishing Anderson County.

Soul Food & The Jamie Wright Experience

Thursday, Feb. 10 – 6 p.m.

Student Dining Hall, Burwell Building

The Jamie Wright Experience band surrounds an event with music, creating an entertaining atmosphere that has a diversified repertoire of musical styles — from jazz, funk to dance and more. The band brings members from several walks of life who have combined their musical gifts to be heard and seen by all who are true music lovers. The band members are Rico Tyler (keyboard), Tez Sherard (drums), and Jamie Wright (lead vocalist). Dinner of Soul Food will be served.
