Once again – I’m sharing announcemnents that I received from the Spartanburg History Hub mailing list….

Do you have your summer plans in place? What will your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews & neighbors do with their time? Why not register them now for one or more of our camps? Here’s a list of all of our camps with dates, ages, and locations. Scroll down for more details and registration contact information.


These are fun and educational (but don’t mention that to your kids!) camps they won’t want to miss!

In Your Backyard – Regional History Museum – June 13-17 (Monday-Friday) – 9:30-3:00 – $100 for 7-10 year olds

Camp Colonial: Living History Camp – Walnut Grove Plantation – June 14-17 (Tuesday-Friday) – 9:00-12:00 – $80.00 for 8-13 year olds

Military History – Regional History Museum – June 20-24 (Monday-Friday) – 9:30-3:00 – $100 for 7-10 year olds

Land, Water, People: Natural History Camp – Historic Price House – June 28-30 (Tuesday-Friday) 9:00-12:00 – $60.00 for 8-13 year olds

Ancestor Detectors – Regional History Museum – July 11- 15 (Monday-Friday) – 9:30-3:00 – $100 for 11-15 year olds

Military History – Regional History Museum – July 25-July 29 (Monday-Friday) – 9:30-3:00 – $100 for 11-14 year olds

By the way, we have had some donors provide a few need-based scholarships, so let us know about any interested and qualified students. We are also still accepting scholarship sponsors, so feel free to send in registration fees for one or more students. It is a tax-deductible gift that reaps lifelong benefits for the recipients.

In Your Backyard at Regional History Museum

Monday, June 13, 2011 – Friday, June 17, 2011

9:30-3:00 each day (Bring lunch, snacks provided)

This program will train children on what archeologists do and teach them about artifacts. The program will allow the students to dig around the Seay House & other sites for artifacts

Camp Colonial: Living History Camp at Walnut Grove Plantation

Tuesday, June 14 – Friday, June 17

9 a.m. to Noon each day

Work and play the colonial way while learning about the life and times of the Moore Family of Walnut Grove Plantation. Each day will focus on a decade of Spartanburg County’s earliest history from the arrival of settlers in the 1760s, to the building of the first schools and churches in the 1770s, to the fighting of the Revolutionary War in the 1780s, and the expansion of commercial farming and slavery in the 1790s. Children participate in hands-on living history activities like weaving, butter churning, gardening, militia drill and more.

Military History at the Regional History Museum

Monday, June 20, 2011 – Friday, June 24, 2011

This summer camp will primarily focus on the four wars, The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, WWI, and WWII, and the impact on Spartanburg

Land, Water, People: Natural History Camp at Historic Price House

Tuesday, June 28, 2011 – Thursday, June 30, 2011

9 a.m. to Noon each day

The Price House, slave cabin, and surrounding forest tell of the environment-altering work done by settlers and slaves to transform the Backcountry frontier into a fully-integrated part of the early United States. Presented in cooperation with Spartanburg Water and the Spartanburg Soil and Water Conservation District, this camp examines the dynamic relationship between people and the place in which they live. It explores the lives of both the free and enslaved residents of Mr. Price’s home and investigates how human activity like cotton and corn farming changed the land and impacted nearby waters. Hands-on living history and nature activities will ensure this outdoor camp is an unforgettable experience!

Ancestor Detectors at the Regional History Museum

Monday, July 11, 2011 – Friday, July 15, 2011

This camp teaches students the methods used to discover ancestors in general and guides them as they seek their own family trees. In years past, students have found heroes of the Revolution and influential citizens of all types!
