Here’s another good upcoming event in the Spartanburg area: This time it’s at the Price House!
The Thomas Price House, built in 1795 at a critical north-south road junction in lower Spartanburg County, is a product both of the vision and financial commitment of the founders of the Spartanburg County Historical Association (SCHA). In 1969, the association purchased not only the site of the homestead, but also 101 surrounding acres of farmland as a future public green space and outdoor educational center. In the last few years, SCHA has worked with the Spartanburg Area Conservancy (SPACE) to place all of the Price House property under a permanent conservation easement.
Now, even in difficult economic times, the Historical Association, SPACE, and other friends of the Price House are moving ahead toward our founders’ vision. This effort has been spearheaded by the work of Boy Scouts in Spartanburg’s Troop 2, First Presbyterian Church. Under the leadership of Eagle Scout candidate Martin Groke, they have laid out an intriguing nature trail that will be enjoyed for many years in the future.
We will dedicate this new feature of the Price House on Saturday morning, August 28, 2010, at 10 a.m. Our special guest will be Spartanburg native, Wofford College alumnus, and South Carolina Educational Television nature expert Rudy Mancke, who will lead his famous “microtour” at the nature trail site. You and your family will not want to miss this unique opportunity to meet Rudy and share in our excitement. You will also be able to enjoy guided tours of the historic Price House.
Help us provide Spartanburg County residents with opportunities to hike, off-road bike, bird watch, exercise outdoors, or simply commune with nature. Help us provide Spartanburg County children with opportunities to learn natural history and science in an outdoor setting. Purchase a ticket for Rudy’s tour and support our effort. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 -17. Children under the age of 5 will be admitted free. Please join us at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 28 the Price House!!
